After a highly anticipated El Nino rainy season, the weather surprised us all as we had a very hot and sunny October! We continue to await the heavy rains set to come our way. We are experiencing daily highs of 28 degrees Celsius! Personally, I’ve always loved warm weather, so I am loving every minute of the unexpected sunshine. š

At the beginning of this month, I had the opportunity to speak at the Association of Christian Schools International Biblical Worldview Integration Conference. I enjoyed the experience and was grateful to present alongside a wonderful colleague of mine. We are both incredibly passionate about teaching children with disabilities and even more so what God says in His Word about all of his children! Our session had well over 50 people, representing various local schools all around Kenya. It was great to make connections, brainstorm strategies in real-time, and support, encourage, and equip other educators to reach all of God’s image-bearers.

Additionally, at school, a few colleagues and myself, began a lunch & learn group called the Inclusion Allies. This is a monthly time for students of all ages in the elementary department, to come during lunch to learn about different disabilities in light of God’s big story! We share Scripture, age-appropriate definitions of varying disabilities, and learn how to be an ally to include other people within our community that have disabilities. It has been amazing to see the turnout each month! Last month’s meeting focused on unpacking the term disability and celebrating Deaf awareness month. This month, we learned about dyslexia, dysgraphia, and dyscalculia. We did various activities to build empathy and understanding for how God created all of our brains differently! Next month, we’ll take a look at ADHD.

Another awesome opportunity this month was creating a sensory room at school! Our department was blessed with so many different sensory tools from a crash pad to a balance beam to a spring board! My coworkers and I took a day to paint the walls and set up this space and we are so excited for our students to benefit from some extra movement and regulation throughout the day.

We also had a wacky Wednesday this month! My husband said that morning, “Wow! We really have different jobs!” Haha! It was fun to put smiles on so many little faces that day. š We also had a big chapel this month to focus on our theme verse this year of John 15-5. I always love seeing the students hands’ raised in worship. Next week is our Spiritual Emphasis Week (like VBS) and it’s always a fun-filled week focused on God. This year the theme is “If the stars were made to worship, so will I.” I’m looking forward to it and the conversations it will spark.

Tutoring is also going really well! I continue to have a steady 6 sessions a week and I genuinely look forward to each of them. I guess it’s confirmation that teaching was the right choice for me. š Two of my sessions are even in French! This has been really enjoyable for me as I often don’t have the opportunity to put my bilingual diploma to use!

Aside from work, this month had many other wonderful moments. From watching beautiful sunsets on my balcony to a surprise turkey dinner on Thanksgiving by my husband (who knew I was missing home), to a long weekend filled with reading books to going to a cooking class with a friend. My niece also turned 17 this month, so some of the family got together to celebrate this milestone with her!

Thank you for your steadfast prayers and support.
Lovingly,
-j.
