may 2024.

& that’s a wrap on year four of teaching in Kenya. I am grateful for the wonderful group of students I had the privilege of teaching this year. We laughed, learned, and grew so much – physically, spiritually, emotionally, academically. I never tire of seeing the progression and acquisition of skills the students attain as the year goes on. The month of May is always especially exciting as the students review skills taught throughout the year and work on mastery. I enjoy making learning fun and what fun was had! Below are some photos taken from the past month.

Knowing this month would be my last at this school, I made a point to be intentional to ‘leave well.’ I spent my lunches with various students I’ve taught over the past four years, listening to their worries for the next grade, their mixed emotions about me transitioning to a different school across town, sharing our favourite memories, and praying together. What I had intended to be a time for helping the kids during this transition, ended up being a beautiful time for me to reflect and tangibly see and hear of the impact I have had on many students. For that I am grateful – grateful they were able to witness Christ in me. A special highlight for me was one of the students I taught four years ago when I first moved to Kenya (once a third grader, now about to enter seventh grade) invited me over for dinner with her family. It was so sweet to hear her speak so fondly of the memories made during her time in my class. Then, to top it all off, she showed me the artwork and projects she treasured from third grade – some still hanging up on the walls in their home. What a beautiful time I will treasure.

At the end of the year, students complete a survey sharing their input on the past year with their teacher. I was so blessed to read their responses. It is a teacher’s dream come true for the students to feel seen, known, and loved in their classroom. Additionally, for me, it was so wonderful to hear that the students feel their understanding of Christ has deepened this year as well. I’ve added some of my favourite responses for you below. To God be the glory for all that He is doing in their lives.

I am excited for a summer of rest and memory-making with friends and family back in Canada. Then, when I’m back in July, I will begin my new role at a different school. I have already moved all of my belongings to my new home across town, ready to be unpacked upon my arrival. A busy weekend indeed (saying goodbye to my current workplace, moving, and getting ready to travel across the world!). I am looking forward to growing my skills, working in a field of my passion, and being in a new community. Learning Support Teacher loading…!

Below are some photos of some good friends of mine here. Gym friends, coworkers, and my beloved landlord. I will miss many things about this community, but trusting God to continue meeting my needs across the city in the fall.

Thank you for your continued support. Now it’s time to enjoy a summer break and recharge. Blessings to you.

  1. Dear Jocelyn:

I so look forward to seeing you and hearing all the details of the new school as well as of leaving the other one. Also to ask questions of a more political nature . May the Lord bless and may the trip home be great.

    Love
