One of the biggest highlights from February was attending the 5th grade 3 day camping trip about two hours away from Nairobi. The focus this year was stewardship within God’s creation and it was such a fun and special few days. We had 55 students, and the time was packed with devotions, worship around the campfire, games, hiking, stargazing, hands-on environmental stewardship activities, and so many sweet in-between moments.

This trip was especially meaningful for me because I support several students in 5th grade, including one amazing girl with Down syndrome. Getting to see her fully participate in a meaningful experience alongside her peers was such a gift. She needed a bit of extra support at times, but she showed so much joy and perseverance. Watching her worship with her classmates, hike with determination, and sit under the stars laughing with friends reminded me again why inclusive opportunities matter so much. My heart was very, very full.

Back at school, we had parent-teacher conferences this month, and I continue to be so thankful as I see growth in my students, not just academically, but in maturity, confidence, and independence. We also recognized and celebrated Black History Month at school, which led to important conversations and learning moments across grade levels.

We also had International Day this month! An opportunity to celebrate our diverse community. On this day, students wear clothing that represents their home or heart country. We have a parade, a cultural fair, and enjoy foods from many different countries. It is always an amazing day to see just how diverse our student body really is. I enjoyed working the Canadian booth!

Outside of school, the rains have slowly begun. There is nothing quite like the smell of rain here, fresh and comforting. Falling asleep to the sound of it on the roof is something I always treasure. I’m also still constantly amazed by the access I have to fresh and affordable produce here. It feels like such a simple gift, but I don’t take it lightly.

This month, I watched some of the Olympic Canadian vs. American hockey games with coworkers and friends, went to a pottery class on Valentine’s Day, and had the chance to visit my market friends twice this month. Hearing updates on their families and spending time together to catch up is always so great!

Wedding planning is also moving along! Noah and I started premarital counseling, and I’m really grateful for this intentional season. Planning for July is exciting and stretching in all the right ways. If you’re willing, we would deeply appreciate prayer as we prepare for marriage. That we would build a strong, Christ-centered foundation, for wisdom and unity as we make decisions, peace in the logistics and planning details, growth and openness in premarital counseling, and joy in this season, not rushing ahead, but being present.

Thank you for continuing to pray, encourage, and support this ministry. I’m reminded often that I don’t do this alone, and I’m so grateful.
With love from Nairobi,
-j.
